Urban Assemblages
Our work in the site started by noticing the existence of a great diversity of animal and vegetal species in the area. Some of these species are located in larger spaces like Moeraske, while others seem to exist in specific spots without a lot of connection with its surroundings. The main responsible of this situation is the presence of rail tracks and the train activity of the site. Railways (some are in use while some are not in use) completely divides the ground-level connection into two parts. And in the center of this seperation, there is an abandoned train depot. Here, we plan the transformation of this building into a seedbank. Like in the Noah’s Ark, borrowing its concept of future prediction and assembling species, the building would now find further potentials for both human and non-humans with combined technology and imagination! We plan the connection of this building with the Schaerbeek Station and the Train World Museum by a train line. The trains crossing from all over Europe carries different kinds of seeds and insects on the wagons. These species sometimes drop on the site, starting their own life in this un-disturbed land. Foreign species are now the new actors of Schaerbeek formation. Outside, we plan to take advantage of this isolated ecosystem by sheltering the existing wild bees in the abandoned wagons, helping to develop the plants of the site and the “vegetal barrier” which will surround the whole building. Inside, bees will help to pollinate the plants from the “Green House” area as well. Wagons play an important role, not only as a shelter for the bees, but also moving them inside the building. Inside, cafe, food court and library are provided for visitors, workers, and experts, while scientist and experts can work in the research center.
